Can African Women Feed the World?
MasterCard Foundation Scholar Argues Women are Africa’s Top Resource
“As part of Africa’s next generation, we cannot begin to discuss development of Africa without talking about agriculture. And we cannot talk about agriculture without talking about women,” explains Loise Mbugua, a MasterCard Foundation Scholar pursuing her undergraduate studies in finance at McGill University’s Desautels Faculty of Management.
Before a full house at The Walrus Talks: Africa’s Next Generation held in Montreal earlier this year, Loise explained how African women’s empowerment starts with prioritizing their role in agricultural production, arguing for improvements to women’s land tenure security, access to agricultural credit for seeds, fertilizers and equipment.
Women, argues Loise, are Africa’s top resource. Provided with the right conditions to flourish, African women can not only feed the continent, but indeed the world.
